Oxfam America and Purple Otter: Part 1
The team at Purple Otter have had the pleasure of working with Oxfam America in a number of capacities over the years, starting with a series of discrete integration projects and building to a full Salesforce migration that kicked off in 2020. Learn more about the first stage of their journey together here. The work the teams completed created a strong operational foundation for the organization’s fundraising and marketing efforts, while also establishing a long-term partnership built on trust. The work at this initial stage was primarily focused on centralizing disparate systems and bringing a holistic approach to the organization’s data management. In working with Purple Otter for their technology systems migration engagement, Oxfam America achieved:
- A modern data warehouse with real-time connectivity, enabling stronger marketing, reporting, and analytics
- A unified donor portal with real-time system integration, giving donors a single self-service digital experience
- Enhanced major donor portfolio management across prospecting, qualification, and cultivation, with better tracking of donor plans, goals, and expected revenue
- Faster financial reporting that delivers actionable revenue insights during the month, rather than 15–20 days after month-end
This was essential work to build a strong foundation for where the organization wanted to go next: leveraging predictive analytics and AI to increase fundraising and operational efficiency.
Building on a Strong Foundation: Part 2
After building the foundations of its Salesforce and data warehouse implementation, Oxfam America’s challenge had evolved. The question was no longer “How do we bring our data together?” but “How do we turn that data into meaningful insights?” The challenge was governing and organizing data in a scalable way so it can be leveraged throughout the entire organization.
Raw data alone doesn’t consistently or reliably prepare an organization for AI. Before predictive analytics, machine learning, or generative AI can deliver meaningful results, the underlying behavioural and demographic data must be organized in a way that reflects how the organization operates. Every data point carries context that isn’t obvious from the raw data alone. For example, a sustainer who appears to have missed a donation hasn’t necessarily churned; they may simply have updated an expired credit card, with one sustaining series ending a new beginning. Without agreed-upon business rules to capture this nuance, AI and predictive models can produce inconsistent answers to the same question. By embedding this organizational knowledge into governed data models, Purple Otter helped ensure that data insights are drawn from a consistent, trusted foundation, allowing the Oxfam teams to focus on insights rather than debating what the data means.
This next phase focused on standardizing key data points, defining constituent and household models and structuring behavioural engagement data so it reflected how Oxfam’s team of fundraisers and marketers think about their data. By transforming disconnected records into meaningful, AI-ready data models, Purple Otter bridged the gap between simply storing data for the sake of it and enabling intelligent analysis, predictive insights and future AI applications. This work focused on:
- Turning a unified data platform into an AI-ready foundation by modeling the relationships and business logic behind Oxfam America’s behavioural and demographic data
- Creating trusted, standardized datasets that improve reporting, fundraising insights, and cross-functional decision-making
- Establishing repeatable data engineering and governance practices to support predictive analytics and future AI capabilities
- Repeatable and governed data pipelines trusted by the internal teams of fundraisers and marketers
Conclusion and What's Next
Oxfam America’s embedded Constituent Product Team were important partners to this work. Bringing together data analysts, engineers, and stakeholders across the organization, the team had already built a strong understanding of Oxfam’s data landscape. Purple Otter partnered alongside them to translate that expertise into scalable data models, capturing the organizational knowledge and relationships needed to create trusted predictive analytics and AI-ready datasets. Building on this partnership, Purple Otter and Oxfam are now moving into Chapter 3, applying data science and machine learning techniques on the established data foundation, to build Oxfam’s intelligence engine.
The Outcome
The intelligence engine will develop iteratively over time, with initial use cases that include:
Purple Otter was the absolute ideal partner for us to build out a new Salesforce NPSP instance and integrations.John Abdulla, Director, Constituent Product, Oxfam America
Conclusion
Together, Purple Otter and Oxfam America transformed data from a collection of disconnected records into a strategic asset for Oxfam America. The result was a stronger foundation for fundraising insights, predictive analytics and responsible AI adoption. This helps ensure that future technology investments are grounded in trusted data and aligned with the organization’s mission.
